hey cool- listening to this song gave me intense reverse deja vu. so i dug through my CDs and found it: <a href="http://tones.vox.com/library/audio/6a00cdf3a33f88cb8f00d4142d0c33685e.html">Rich Man Vs Poor Man</a> from the rapper Common's first album.
Of course I'm familiar with Common due to his collaboration with Stereolab's lead singer. I'm just surprised that his treatment of this track isn't somehow... better. When I heard Kanye's reworking of Mayfield's "Move on Up" I thought it actually brought a fresh beat to the track. This is just... blah.
And now that you've pointed this out, it makes sense that the Solid Steel guys would've played the Whitewater track. They seem to really dig tracking down original material that's sampled in contemporary pop.
